The Network |
 |

The
Network consists of six masked Europeans, each with their own bizarre,
albeit interesting background. Fink, often seen as the leader of the
group, financed the band through money he earned on a “top secret
nuclear invention he created shortly before dropping out of M.I.T.”, while playing guitar and singing vocals. Bassist Van Gough is a Belgium macrobiotic/vegan that was “forced to work entrail duty at his uncle's slaughterhouse in Fresno from the age of 10 until 18, where he moved to Tibet to conquer Mount Everest.”
After 12 attempts he suffered frostbit over 80% of his body and has
lost his nose. He now raises animals for experimental laboratory
purposes. The Drummer for this group, The Snoo, was a Mexican Wrestler
from Argentina and “refuses to let the success of THE NETWORK affect him or his wardrobe IN ANY WAY. Jailed twice in Texas for messing with Texas,
he does not claim to be reformed. Likes to eat hot peppers.” The
Icelandic hitchhiker/sculptor that plays keyboard has a name so hard to
pronounce everyone calls him ‘Z’. Keytar player Captain Underpants has won two gold medals in the Olympics for Sweden,
and speaks “seven languages, all with a slight stutter.” The last
member of this… interesting group is guitar player Balducci, who “loves
to skip in his free time and has a passion for cheap, barely running
devices of transportation.”
The
six members were drawn from all across the globe by an ancient
prophecy, which “predicted their rise to world power and eventually
their demise.” The Network released this statement on their site: “The
Network has been sent here to rid us of the mediocre music that has
inhabited our planet for too long. Their quest is to dominate the
airwaves thus getting rid if the mindless shit that has been dominating
the radio and television for the last 20 years. Tired of music cross
breeding (i.e. rap merging with metal, and American Idol
faux singing style etc), the boys knew they had a job to do. Music
needs to be dangerous again. Music needs to think. The band has
painstakingly set up a factory in Oakland that will produce music, art and film. To educate the people that the moral majority is neither moral nor the majority anymore. The mediocre masses have had their day, now the day finally belongs to us.
They
released their debut album Money Money 20/20 on September 30, 2003 by
Adeline Records, a label co-owned by Billie Joe. The original release
contained a DVD with music videos for six of the songs, while the
re-released version in November 2004 had bonus tracks “Hammer of Gods”
and a Misfits cover “Teenagers From Mars.” They also released a DVD on
the same day entitled Disease is Punishment, featuring live tracks from
their first show.
Now,
there is some controversy over the members of The Network. Many people
are under the impression that the leader of the band, Fink, is none other than Billie Joe Armstrong,
while Van Gough and The Snoo are thought to be Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool
respectively. Billie Joe actively denies this, and left a recorded
statement on the Green Day website. Armstrong says, "I
just wanted to talk about the rumours and the bullshit that has been
going on lately. All I gotta say is fuck The Network. These guys are
totally spreading rumors. I try to do those guys a favor by bringing
them to this country and putting out their record and this is how I get
repaid, by talking shit about my band. Unfortunately there is a
contract and I have to put out their record. The only thing I can say
is "Fuck you, Network. Bring it on".”
Of
course, it is obvious to any true Green Day fan, or even anybody for
that matter, that the three members of The Network are unmistakebly the
three members from Green Day. Billie Joe’s voice can be heard clearly
on the record, and even with masks you can still recognize all three,
although Mike is the hardest to pick. Warner/Chapell Music actually
proved that “members of Green Day are invloved in The Network by citing
the three Green Day members as having writing credits for The Network’s
album Money Money 20/20.” Billie Joe has also written for Pinhead
Gunpowder under the alias Wilhelm Fink. Both Fink and Billie Joe are
Aquarius, and in the song Spike, it mentions that ‘Brandon’ moves into
a warehouse in Oakland, just like Billie Joe did in the early 1990’s. Billie Joe also financed the band, instead of Fink as The Network claim.
Other members of the band are thought to be Reto Peter (possibly Captain Underpants), a Swiss producer, and Chris Dugan (suggested to be Z), a sound engineer. The idea that Reto Peter is Captain Underpants
is supported by the use of Swiss German in the fake press conference.
One of the songs is also called Reto. Chris Dugan is also sound
engineer for Money Money 20/20 and mixer for the live DVD. The last
member, Balducci, is thought to be Green day’s touring partner Jason
White, while the manger ‘Dr. Svengali’ is John Roecker.
Although
the two bands Green Day and the Network are closely related, their
sound is very different (if you exclude the use of masturbation in
Right Hand-O-Rama). The Network’s sound, which is a blend of “New wave
both great (Devo, Sparks, Kraftwerk)
and terrible (every German band that isn’t Kraftwerk)”, is completely
unique. “Money Money 20/20 features… more lyrics about sex-starved
robots than any other record released that year. Even though they
weren’t, you could see how a band like green Day, in their position,
could be liberated by the sheer ridiculousness of it all, and the fun
the Network (whoever they are) must have been having playing tracks
like ‘Hungry Supermodels,’ ‘X-ray Hamburger,’ and ‘Transistors Gone
Wild.’”
